Cairns Aquarium is in the heart of Cairns adjoined by the The Wet Tropics of the Daintree and The Great Barrier Reef, two world heritage areas in the tropical north of Queensland.
The aquarium provides a venue for seeing and interacting with the diverse plants and animals from the region in Australia’s Wet Tropics.
Cairns Aquarium was opened in 2017, the first new public aquarium built in Australia for 17 years and brings the beautiful reef environment to an accessible location for everyone, without the worry of stingers, ability to swim, or other reasons that may prevent some from venturing out to The Great Barrier Reef directly.
A unique feature of the aquarium is it is focused on species found in the area where the aquarium is located. Tropical fish and animals are not unique to the aquarium, many cities have tropical fish displays, however, Cairns Aquarium has an incredible biodiversity on their doorstep, letting them have an incredible diverse showcase of species only local to the area.
