Enjoy the rainforest canopy from above on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway between Cairns and the beautiful Kuranda. Other than a helicopter flight, this is a unique way to look at Australia’s Wet Tropics Heritage Area.
The Skyrail cable car leaves from Smithfield, a few kilometres north of the main part of Cairns. It glides above the rainforest for 7.5km, passing Red Peak and Barron Falls.
A ranger guided boardwalk tour is included at Red Peak, with lush ferns, climbing palms, and imposing rainforest giants. Rare butterflies and birds can be sighted in the Red Peak rainforest.
Barron Falls, or Din Din, is a sacred place to the Djabuganydji people. It has amazing panoramic view of the waterfall and the gorge the Barron River flows down from the viewing platform.
The last cable car leaves Kuranda at 3.45pm. Last departure for a return trip from Smithfield is at 2.45pm, however, you would want to be earlier if you want time to stop at Kuranda for a while.
Skyrail can be combined with the Kurandra Scenic Railway, enjoying both experiences in one. The Kuranda Scenic Railway leaves from a different location so a transfer bus from Smithfield is included.
