Four Mile Beach is a patrolled beach with a stinger net at Port Douglas in Tropical North Queensland.
The beach is lined by palm trees along its length, which is not four miles long but it is nearly five kilometres, not too far short. I tried to look up why it was named Four Mile Beach but couldn’t find anything.
The northern end is where most go to, close to where the main activity is at Port Douglas and where the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club is located.
The access to the beach near the surf club has an open public shower next to a water fountain. Parking is along the road and in front of Jalunbu Park 
which is next to the surf club.
The beach is flat with compacted sand, great for a run along the beach and kilometres of sand for a decent distance if you like a longer run than a quick jog. It makes for easy walking too, perhaps to stroll to a quieter part of the beach than the busier northern part.
At the north end of the beach is the headlands of Port Douglas, known as Flagstaff Hill. A walking trail leaves from the beach, zig-zagging up Flagstaff Hill to the top and the Four Mile Beach Lookout for a scenic view over Four Mile Beach.
Stingers are a concern at beaches in northern Queensland, making the beaches inaccessible during the warmer months when stingers are more likely to be about. A stinger net at a patrolled beach ensures a swim is safer when you are more likely to want to cool off.
To Get There
Port Douglas turnoff is along the Captain Cook Hwy, around 47 kilometres north of Cairns and about 13 kilometres south of Mossman. There is a brown sign at the roundabout at the turnoff on Port Douglas Rd into Port Douglas, the Visitor Information Centre is shortly on the left. From the Visitor Information Centre, continue along Port Douglas Rd for 4.9km (becoming Davidson St) and turn right into Mowbray Rd at the brown sign for Four Mile Beach. Follow Mowbray Rd for 250m with the access point to the beach at the junction of the Esplanade. Parking can be found along the Esplanade or before the surf club in front of Jalunbu Park.
