The Big Chook sits at a small park in Moonbi, next to the Moonbi Museum. It is around 2 metres x 2 metres, perched on a post, lifting it to a lofty 4 metres tall. Built in the 1970s, the Big Chook in Moonbi was created in the early days of Australia’s big things. It was built in tribute to the chicken industry that was part of Moonbi at the time.
I stopped here years before starting the Brown Signs website, one of the rare pre-website photos taken, returning from a family trip to Sydney. There is a small parking area next to a small park with some simple sheltered picnic tables, as well as unsheltered picnic tables, and a basic playground with a slide and climbing things.
There are also toilets accessible in the park, and a general store with hot and cold food available, making it a good spot for a break travelling along the New England Highway.
