The Big Murray Cod in Tocumwal is one of several spread in different states across Australia. Tocumwal’s Big Cod is, in a way, the most genuine as the largest Murray Cod in the world was caught there.
The giant cod is 6.4 metres long, 2.29 metres high, and 1.7 metres wide. The body is made from fibre glass, over a steel truss and strutting. Weighing around 204 kilograms, the Big Murray Cod is far bigger than you’d expect to catch in the Murray River.
The decision to make the big thing was by the Women’s Auxiliary of Tocumwal Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, in 1967. It followed four years of investigation of other big thing attractions, including the Big Banana and The Dog on the Tuckerbox.
