The Big Boot has travelled well over the years, moving from place to place. It currently lives in Deagon, the north end of Brisbane, at a car yard. Before stepping over to Deagon, The Big Boot resided above another car yard in Chermside.
For its big move, the Big Boot was refurbished, changing its colour from the tired old reliable brown boot to a fresh and vibrant blue, matching The Car Mine brand colours.
Many remember the Big Boot in Chermside on Gympie Road, adorning the top of the building from 1990. It was bought by the Boots Camping shop that was there, later becoming a car yard. It joined the big things of Australia nearly 25 years earlier.
In 1976, around 5 years after the Big Pineapple, the boot was built for the Morris Boot Factory, on the corner of Caxton Street and Hale Street in Paddington. The building doesn’t exist anymore, demolished in 1990 to widen Hale Street near Lang Park.
There were discussions to try relocating The Big Boot back to Paddington, to return it where it has historical links. In the end, a suitable location in Paddington wasn’t able to be found. Deagon may not have the original connections with The Big Boot, but it is still accessible and remains as one of Australia’s Big Things more than 50 years after it was built.
