The Big Galah in South Australia’s Kimba sits at the ‘Halfway Across Australia Tourist Shop’. Geographically, Kimba is halfway across Australia between Sydney and Perth.
Opening in 1993, the Big Galah is made of fibreglass sitting over a steel frame. It was modelled on the Galahs that are in the region by Robert Venning, taking 18 months to complete.
Sitting 8 metres high and 2.5 metres wide, the Big Galah weights around 2.3 tonnes.
The gender of Australia’s big things are not always questioned. The Big Galah could be either male or female, however, an egg was once found in the nest suggesting it is a female. The egg was found on April Fool’s Day so it isn’t conclusive. What gender do you think it is?
