The Big Knight was built in the 1980s to accompany the Macadamia Castle
built a few years before it.
Macadamia Castle was first called Knockrow Castle and the knight was planned to stand sentry at the entrance of the car park and addition to Australia’s growing big things.
The armour was originally painted white with the red and yellow “cloth” the same colour it is now. The chest of the armour had a red cross, as the knight was meant to be St George. Originally, a dragon was to be lying at his feet.
The design was based on a suit of armour that was on display in Knockrow Castle at the time and made to be three times the size, an impressive 6.5 metres tall.
The knight holds two weapons. A sword on his left side and a trident shaped spear leaning on his right hand.
Much of the knight is made from fibreglass and constructed by local Bob McTavish who was a surfboard shaper and had opened an aviation fibreglass business.
The Big Knight is much more colourful these days with blue armour and silver highlights. The red cross is gone, replaced with a shield design showing the castle and animals from the animal fun park accessed through Macadamia Castle
.
The known stands to the side of the parking area and is easily accessible without having to enter Macadamia Castle itself, so it can be seen after hours if required.
If the knight isn’t big enough for you but you drive an electric vehicle, the parking area has Tesla recharging stations which may entice you there.
