The Big Shoe can be found along Moorooduc Hwy at the front of Youley Garden Supplies. You can’t help thinking about the nursery rhyme, There was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe.
The Big Shoe was originally built by the Bata Shoe Company for the Moomba Parade in Melbourne
. Bata Shoe Company, originally established in Czechoslovakia in 1894, started manufacturing in Seaford Victoria in 1961, and later moving to Mornington where they are still located today. The Bata Shoe was stored at Seaford, where they had a warehouse.
Once its useful life ended, it was sold and donated to Youley Garden Supplies. It is looking more like an old shoe that has had better days – it is over 60 years old. The colouring of the shoe has changed at some point, perhaps as freshening up. Originally, it was a mix of yellow and brown, with the house tops white with red roofs.
The Big Show is behind a fence, on the inside of the garden supplies property. While you can’t access it directly, it is easily viewable from outside.
