The Darwin Stubby is already known to be a larger variety of Australian brown bottled beer. Larrimah in Northern Territory has the Big Stubby, a large sculpture of the NT Draught stubby.
The sculpture sits outside the Larrimah Hotel beside a pink panther in a chair and another piloting a gyrocopter. The pub was originally further south in Birdum but was moved to Larrimah when the railhead of the North Australia Railway ended there.
For those who don’t know, an Australian stubby is normally a 375ml bottle of beer, although smaller sizes ranging from 330ml to 355ml are becoming more frequent. ‘Long necks’ or ‘tallies’ are larger 750ml bottles, although they are not as popular as they were many years ago.
The NT Draught is a lager that comes in at a massive 2,270ml (over 2 litres) and became known as the Darwin Stubby.
The Darwin Stubby came about when NT Brewery started in 1956. NT Brewery didn’t have a bottling plant so it shipped bottles from Melbourne. With such a large distance to transport the beer, the brewery decided to introduce the Big Stubby in 1958.
The NT Draught Darwin Stubby finished regular production in 2015. The Big Stubby in Larrimah still remains along with its pink panthers keeping it company.
