The Big Turkey is a statue of a turkey at the southern end of Kyogle in New South Wales.
The meaning of the name Kyogle has been debated for years. It was possibly from C.A. Irish believing it was from the word meaning ‘Plain Turkey’. It is more likely derived from the Bangjalang Aboriginal word Gayugul meaning Brolga.
Regardless of the reference to a turkey was misunderstood years ago, the turkey is still represented in the town’s identity. The Kyogle Rugby League Football Club is known as the Kyogle Turkeys. And there is that “big thing” in a paddock on the southern edge of town to reinforce it.
