Mullumbimby is a quirky entry to the Big Things collection. It isn’t a thing that is big but it is a declared big thing, being the biggest little town in Australia.
We were not really sure if it was meant to be a big thing. We just happened to be passing by on our way to the Crystal Castle 
. When we spotted it we thought we better get a photo because it might be a big thing and researching later it is on many big things lists.
In the North Coast NSW region, Mullumbimby is a few kilometres inland from the coast originally established and grew for the timber industry, collecting the sort after red cedar timber.
Mullumbimby is in the Byron Shire, shared with the well known relaxed township of Byron Bay. The difference, other than Byron Bay is on the coast and Mullumbimby is inland, Byron Bay has become busier and more popular while Mullumbimby has a more modest and laid back feel.
The location on the map for this big thing isn’t the town itself. It is the location of the sign displaying “The Biggest Little Town in Australia”. It is at the start of Mullumbimby Road which leads directly to the town less than 4km from the sign.
The sign doesn’t have any facilities at it directly but the opposing corner has a small park area with a picnic table shelter. Across the other road is a service station and Uncle Tom’s Pies where you can get something to munch on before heading into Mullumbimby (or on the way back out). We didn’t try the pies at Uncle Tom’s as we had already eaten dinner at one of the pubs in Mullumbimby.
In addition to Crystal Castle, Mullumbimby is a gateway to some Brown Sign destinations. Minyon Falls and the Whian Whian State Conservation Area is accessible by heading south out of Mullumbimby along Jubilee Ave.
