Rainbow Reserve is one of a series of free camping sites between Goondiwindi and Yelarbon along Kildonan Road, an alternative to driving along the Cunningham Highway.
Camping is suitable for caravans, motorhomes, tents, and camper trailers. You are allowed to stay for up to 14 nights at the designated bush camping reserve. Dogs are also allowed, but must remain on a leash.
The main difference of Rainbow Reserve to the other free camp sites is it is next to a billabong, rather than being beside the Macintyre River. Some people have successfully fished in the lagoon, and because it isn’t a river on the New South Wales border, an NSW fishing license is not required.
It is also located close to the road. Some of the other reserves require you to drive away from the road to get to the camp sites.
There are only a few spaces near the water, enough room for around 4 campers or vans, but more could potentially camp away from the water. The ground is a little uneven in some spots. The reserve is also located on the other side of Kildonan Road, but I’m unsure if there are suitable camping spots over there. If you have a larger group, one of the other reserves may be better suited.
There are no facilities at Rainbow Reserve, although there was a garbage bin for rubbish available when we were there. There are no toilets, so make sure you are self-reliant or can make a trip into town for toilets.
Rainbow Reserve is the closest camping reserve to Goondiwindi. Towards Yelarbon you will find Yellowbank Reserve
, Lees Reserve
, and Bengalla Reserve
.
I was disappointed that the brown signs for Rainbow Reserve had been changed to blue signs, the same done for the other three reserves. It is a pet-peeve of mine, because blue signs are for libraries, toilets, and other service-based places. Rainbow Reserve should have a brown sign.
