Yellowbank Reserve sits between Goondiwindi and Yelarbon, one of a series of free camping sites along Kildonan Road, an alternative to driving along the Cunningham Highway.
Camping is available to caravans, motorhomes, tents, and camper trailers, and you are allowed to stay for up to 14 nights at the designated bush camping reserve. Note, however, the tracks into the sites are basic and narrow without much room for turning around so it isn’t ideal for larger vans and motorhomes. Dogs are also allowed if they are on a leash.
The campsites are near the Macintyre River. Fishing is allowed, however, the river is on the New South Wales border is an NSW fishing license is required – yes, even if you are standing on the Queensland side of the river. Fishing wouldn’t have been good when we were there as the river had only a small amount of flow.

There are only a few spaces at Yellowbank Reserve, perhaps a few more can be found away from the water at another track from the road, more towards Yelarbon. If you have a larger group, one of the other reserves may be better suited. If you are by yourself or in a small group, it can be a great spot with seclusion to yourselves.
There are no facilities at Yellowbank Reserve, although there was a garbage bin for rubbish available near the entrance when we were there. There are no toilets, so make sure you are self-reliant or can make a trip into town for toilets.
Yellowbank Reserve is the second closest camping reserve to Goondiwindi, the closest being Yellowbank Reserve
. Head east towards Yelarbon and you will find Lees Reserve
, and Bengalla Reserve
.
I was disappointed that the brown signs for Rainbow Reserve had been changed to blue signs, the same done for the other three reserves. It is a pet-peeve of mine, because blue signs are for libraries, toilets, and other service-based places. Rainbow Reserve should have a brown sign.
