Calico Cottage Heritage Complex is a not to be missed stop when travelling through Wallumbilla. The complex encompasses Calico Cottage, where you can sample a baked treat, meet the locals and browse local crafts; the Heritage Complex where you can gain an insight into the history and lifestyle of this remarkable community; the Railway Station which houses memorabilia and archival information pertaining to the district’s tragic train disaster in 1956 and the Grain Shed.
The Grain Shed at the rear of the complex was once used to store items awaiting delivery on and off the train. One of the last of its kind, the Wallumbilla Grain Shed is a stately tribute to the town’s agriculture and railway history.
This is a historic precinct set in the old ‘Cardwell Telegraph and Post Office’ (now known as the Bush Telegraph) which was built in 1870 and is one of the oldest buildings in North Queensland.
There are not many brown signs and big things in Wallumbilla. The ones listed below (other than Calico Cottage Heritage Complex) are in Roma.
