Near what used to be the old main road to Maryborough from Gympie lies the historic grave site and memorial of Donald Sutherland. Local history tells of Donald on a deliver run, including a supply of spirits. Travelling from Maryborough to the newly discovered gold fields of Gympie, he stopped for a sleep on muddy ground beneath his dray. While sleeping in heavy rain, the dray rolled over him.
Donald Sutherland died on 16th September, 1868, at only 32 years of age, leaving his wife Flora A Sutherland and their two children. The gravestone sits within the memorial but with weathering it is getting difficult to read. A sign has been made and placed at the front of the memorial with the wording from the gravestone.
The memorial appears it was first a simple metal frame around the grave and headstone. A more modern looking shelter has been added over the gravestone, presumably to reduce the weathering of the stone. Four metal rings (from wagon wheels?) have also been added to the sides of the fence, together making it appear to be a symbolic dray wagon.
The main road north shifted from what is now known as Old Maryborough Road further west, around 6 kilometres from where the memorial is located. Several deviation projects
brought the main road west in the 1960s, with additional works during the 1970s and 1980s. In October 2024, the new Gympie bypass brings the main highway back towards the Old Maryborough Road corridor, travelling around 500 metres east of the Donald Sutherland memorial.
