The Adelaide River War Cemetery was created for the burial of servicemen and women from the area in Northern Territory. It was opened in February 1942 after the Japanese air raids on Darwin.
Next to the war cemetery is a civil cemetery. The civil cemetery includes several graves of civilians who lost their lives as a result of war service. For example, nine post office workers lost their lives from the initial Japanese bombing of Darwin.
