Humbug Reach is a lookout along a stretch of road beside the Daintree River on the way to Daintree Village
. There is a small stopping area on the side of the road where you can pull over. It is needed to be travelling from Daintree Village back towards Mossman as there is no room to turn across the double unbroken line on the road.
From the side of the road, the Daintree River can be seen. However, it is heavily vegetated and the view is mostly obscured.
A “reach” is a segment or section of a river that is normally without obstacles, straight and level. The uninterrupted stretch can be sailed in one reach, without tacking.
Why this stretch of the Daintree River is called Humbug Reach is something more difficult to find. There are a few mentions of Humbug Reach in the Daintree Notes
and other papers from the 1930s, mainly mentioning the road. The stretch of road seems to be named after the stretch of the Daintree River. Why it was named Humbug Reach has alluded me.
