Kelly’s Knob Lookout is on one of the red rocky outcrops jutting out of the landscape around the town of Kununurra.
The Aboriginal name for Kelly’s Knob is Thegoowiyeng, a dreaming place of the night pigeon.
The bitumen road takes you to the parking area where you can get views across the town and the plains. There are two lookout points to see the views from Kelly’s Knob.
Walking up the stairs to the right takes you to a higher point from the parking area with better views over the town. The walk up is short and not too difficult.
From the lookout you can see the summit of the higher peak on Kelly’s Knob, with the parking area sitting between it and yourself.
For the better lookout point with 360 degree views, climb up to the top of the summit of the higher peak. It is more difficult with plenty of steps but if you are able to, this is where the views are most rewarding.

Elephant Rock or Sleeping Buddha can be see from the lookout, which is about 6km to the south, next to the Ord river that passes Kununurra between Lake Argyle
and the Five Rivers Lookout
where it exits into the Scambridge Gulf.
Buddha Rock gets its name from what it looks like, depending on where you view it from. It can look like a Buddha lying down or like an elephant.
The Diversion Dam for Lake Kununurra, the Ord River as it passes Kununurra, can be seen from the lookout also, part of the Kununurra irrigation system.
Kelly’s Knob sits 191 metres above the surrounding area and is a great place to see the sunset from. If you do go for a sunset walk, make sure you take a torch for the walk back down in the dark.
There isn’t much in the way of shade and it can be quite hot. Keep this in mind when walking up during the middle of the day, especially during the hotter months.
