The Hummock is a hill in an otherwise very flat Bundaberg and surrounds, the weathered remains of a small basaltic volcano. It was bought by RACQ in the 1930s to be a landmark and lookout in the Bundaberg region and later sold to Bundaberg council. When it was officially opened it was described as Bundaberg’s Mt Coot-tha. The Hummock has two parts, the lookout and a park with a boardwalk that takes you a little higher up the summit of The Hummock.
The Hummock is not too high at under 100m, but with the lands so flat the views carry a fair way. The day was overcast when I was there, but from the lookout, you could easily look back to Bundaberg city and beyond to the west, and see the ocean water to the east.
Facilities at the lookout is basic, but there is a rubbish bin, a water bubbler, and bench seating to enjoy the views from. There is one shelter with a table and bench chairs, and the grass is a nice spot to sit and enjoy the views with a prepared lunch if it isn’t too hot in the sun.
Turn into Bowden St near the exit of the lookout, and it takes you to Heathwood Park. There are no views from here, but there are some additional facilities that make it more viable for a longer stop. There are more tables with seats, and plenty of shady trees and the council BBQs will let you cook up those sausages for a hot lunch. Toilets are also available at the lower part. A simple playground and plenty of grass area are there for the kids to burn off some energy while you wait for the snags to cook.
There is a boardwalk starting from the part that heads further up The Hummock and supposedly offers 360-degree views. It is a pleasant walk up to the top, and there are a couple of spots to sit down along the way to take in the forest or to have a breather for those who like to take it easy. It zig-zags up the hill, with only a few steps here and there, so it isn’t too steep. At the top of the boardwalk is a set of stairs to the top of a water tank to access the views. The views are obscured by other tanks, communication towers, and trees that have reclaimed the horizon. The views are better from the lookout, but you do get to see some parts you can see from the lookout, and I enjoyed the walk itself also.
To Get There
From the Bundaberg Visitor Information Centre 
, head east on Avenue St and turn right into Alexandra St. Follow to the next intersection and turn left into Whittred St and follow up to the traffic lights. Turn left into Princess St and follow for 5.7km becoming Bargara Rd. Turn right into Rehbain Ave Road. The road will bend to the right, immediately turn left to remain on Rehbain Ave. It then turns into Grotherr St. Turn right into Heathwood Cres, then left into Heathwood Ln. This takes you to the lookout carpark.
To get to The Hummock, head out of Bundaberg on Windermere Road, and turn left into Hummock Road with a brown sign “Lookout”. Just after the first street on the left, the road sort of splits, veer to the left a little. I didn’t notice a sign at this junction which would have made it easier. If you go passed it to the right, just take the next two lefts and you will end up in the same place.
You can also go head out of Bundaberg on Bargara Road, and turn right into Rehbain Ave Road. The road will bend to the right, immediately turn left to remain on Rehbain Ave. It then turns into Grotherr St. Turn right into Heathwood Cres, then left into Heathwood Ln. This takes you to the lookout carpark.
