Truganini Lookout is located on The Neck, a narrow bit between the north and south parts of Bruny Island. It is closer to the north side, offering great views of the neck towards the south, although the views are all around with full 360 degree views.
The name of the lookout comes from the name of an Aboriginal woman, Truganini. Truganini was of the Nuenonne people at Lunawanna Alonnah, now called Bruny Island. She lived from 1812 to 1876 and fought for her people. She is regarded as the last of her people, with the Nuenonne people declared extinct after her death.
A memorial is at the lookout, the walk being somewhere around 200 to 300 steps straight to the top.
A separate walk leads from the parking area to the other side of the neck, where there is a penguin rookery. Access to the beach is not allowed between dusk and dawn so the penguins are not scared to come ashore.
