The Z Bend lookout and trail are at the Murchison River Gorge, a part of the Kalbarri National Park
in Western Australia.
Z Bend is being upgraded with the Kalbarri Skywalk so we were unable to visit it when we were there. It will consist of two platforms extending out 25 metres from the edge of the gorge, around 100 metres above the Murchison River.
The Kalbarri Skywalk is due to be opened in the middle of 2020. It is a shame because it seems like it is a wonderful spot to visit in Kalbarri National Park, although we did get to see the spectacular Nature’s Window
which isn’t too far from Z Bend.
We are unsure if the new skywalk replaces the original lookout, although it is reasonable to assume it will. Shaded shelters, toilets and a kiosk is part of the upgrades being built.
The Z Bend River Trail is a difficult 2.6km return walk down to the Murchison River Gorge. The trail is fairly flat at first before descending steeply into the gorge. The descent requires scrambling, use of ladder climbs, and narrow chasms to get to the bottom.
The walk to the lookout is a shorter 1.3km return from the carpark. The distance may change with the new upgrades of the skywalk.
