Gatakers Bay is on Point Vernon in Hervey Bay and is the northern end of the Hervey Bay Esplanade Trail.
The Hervey Bay Esplanade Trail is a 16km walk following the coastline between Gatakers Bay and Dayman Park
at Urangan Harbour. The walk can be extended 1km further continuing west on to Parraweena Park.
Fishermen will find the fish cleaning tables useful at Gatakers Bay after returning from a fishing session. Located here is one of the two boat ramps to choose from at Point Vernon. The other can be found at The Gables
on the other side of the point.
The park is simple with the boat ramp and cleaning tables the main facilities, as well as parking for vehicles with trailers. The brown sign shows symbols for sheltered picnic tables and BBQs, however, these don’t exist at the immediate area.
Black Stump Park
is only 250m away from the ramp and has more facilities, including toilets, picnic tables, BBQ and a playground. The lack of facilities isn’t too much of an issue with the nearby park.
I couldn’t find specific information about where the Gatakers Bay name comes from. Graham and Gataker were merchants in Maryborough going back to the 1860s. Charles Gataker and his sons changing the business to Gataker and Sons. Gatakers Building and Warehouse Complex
is a feature in Maryborough. It is likely Gatakers Bay was named after the family.
