2WD and Low Clearance Access

For 2wd access, the best way is via Ubobo or Gladstone.

From Ubobo (Boyne Valley), head west on the gravel Cedarvale Rd from Gladstone Monto Rd for about 20km and turn right into Clifton Road. Head north for 25km (via Clifton Road and Diglum Road) and turn left into Tableland Road. Follow Tableland Road Turn left and drive a further 25km to the northern national park entrance near The Barracks.

To get to Ubobo from Miriam Vale, head south on the Bruce Hwy and turn right into Blackman Gap Rd towards Boyne Valley. Follow Blackmans Gap Rd for 27.8km to the end, then turn right on Gladstone Monto Rd. Continue for 9km to turn left into Cedarvale Rd and follow the directions above from Ubobo.

To get to Ubobo from Monto, head north through the town towards Gladstone (staying on the eastern side of the old railway line, do not follow Burnett Hwy). The road becomes Gladstone Monto Rd, follow for 82km to turn left into Cedarvale Rd and follow the directions above from Ubobo.

From Gladstone, head west along the Dawson Hwy through Calliope. After Calliope, continue on Dawson Hwy for 3.6km and turn left towards Monto on Gladstone Monto Rd. After 1.5km turn right into Tableland Rd. Follow Tableland Rd for 50km to the northern national park entrance near The Barracks. Tableland Rd is single lane bitumen for the first 8km before becoming a gravel road.

4WD High Clearance Access

For 4wd access, there are a couple of other options. The first has two approaches, from Ubobo or from near Cania Gorge National Park.

From Ubobo (Boyne Valley), head west on the gravel Cedarvale Rd from Gladstone Monto Rd for about 27.5km. Turn right and follow the road for about 6.4 kilometres along Clewleys Gap Road. Continue ahead keeping to the right and the entrance of Kroombit Tops National Park is about 1km, as the track starts to climb. The track is fairly steep but in good condition. After 2km you will arrive at the information board at the southern end of Kroombit Tops National Park.

From Burnett Hwy just north of Monto, turn into Cania Rd towards Cania Gorge and follow 10km before turning right into Wongalee Rd. From the entrance of Cania Gorge National Park, Wongalee Rd is on the left 2.4km towards Burnett Hwy. Continue on Wongalee Rd for 3.9km to the end, and turn left into Clonmel Rd with the brown sign for Kroombit Tops NP. Follow Clonmel Rd for 22km where you will reach another brown sign Kroombit Tops NP with a closed gate onto Mahoon Ck Rd. This is the first of many gates, I can't recall how many but I think 15 or more. A co-driver to open and close gates is definitely useful. Remember to close gates if you find them closed, and leave them open if you find them open.  There are also a number of creek crossings, some were dry and the others were fairly shallow. The weather had been quite dry so there could be deeper crossings normally and after heavy rain in the area. Follow Mahoon Ck Rd for 10km, and turn right (still Mahoon Ck Rd). Continue for another 11km and turn left at the brown sign for Kroombit where Clewleys Gap Rd meets (it appeared the sign for Clewleys Gap Rd was missing from the signpost). The entrance of Kroombit Tops National Park is about 1km, as the track starts to climb. The track is fairly steep but in good condition. After 2km you will arrive at the information board at the southern end of Kroombit Tops National Park.

For second 4wd access option is only for vehicles with low range and no trailers allowed. This leads to the Razorback Track. The tracks are not difficult but they are steep, very steep in some sections. There is also some driving along a creek bed for an extended section. It was mostly dry while we were there however it was during a long dry period.

From Biloela head south along Burnett Hwy for 4.1km and turn left into Van Itallies Rd. From Thangool head north along Burnett Hwy for 6.1km and turn right into Van Itallies Rd. After 1.4km turn right into Valentine Plains Rd and follow for 33.6km. Turn right into Alcocks Rd and after 1.8km veer right over the cattle grid to continue on Alcocks Rd. Continue for about 1.7km where you will need to enter a gate to travel through private property. About 1 or 2km in the road starts to become an off-road track with sections driving along a creek bed. Part of the track along the creek has been closed, however, the track is signposted well enough. There are some gates that need to be opened and closed, remember to close gates if you find them closed, and leave them open if you find them open. You will pass through a final gate with a national park sign pointing to the left for "Razorback 4WD Track, Steep sections ahead".
