The Nullarbor Links Golf Course is an 18 hole course spread over 1,365 kilometres with one hole in each participating town or roadhouse along the Eyre Highway. Some holes are set up specifically for the course, others are a nominated hole at an established golf course.
Hole 5 of the Nullarbor Links Golf Course (or hole 14 in reverse) is at Nullarbor. It is a 538m Par 5 hole through desert scrub with a right dog-leg. The tee is found north of the Nullarbor Roadhouse along a side road, about 800-850m from the highway, with the hole played back towards the roadhouse.
At the tees there is always an information board providing details about the name of the hole and a devotion attributed to the tee itself. There is no background information about the name of the hole.
The tee is devoted to Coral & Scobie Beattie. Carol and Elwyn ‘Scobie’ Beattie moved to Nullarbor Station as station hands, having moved from Penong where the Australia’s Biggest Windmill is now located.
Coral & Scobie built an extension to Nullarbor Station using stone and cement. They used old dingo traps and pieces of scrap iron to reinforce it. Perhaps this is where the name Dingo’s Den comes from.
They became managers of Nullarbor Station in 1954 and decided to set up a shop. They sold petrol by gallon measures, hand pumped from 44-gallon drums they had transported from Fowlers Bay. Coral & Scobie left Nullarbor in 1960 after the Nullarbor Roadhouse was established.
