The Nullarbor Links Golf Course is an 18 hole course spread over 1,365 kilometres with one hole in each participating town or roadhouse along the Eyre Highway. Some holes are set up specifically for the course, others are a nominated hole at an established golf course.
Hole 11 of the Nullarbor Links Golf Course (or hole 8 in reverse) is at Caiguna. It is a 310m Par 4 hole with the tee off the left side of the roadhouse.
The name of the hole is 90 Mile Straight and is located only a few metres from Australia’s longest straight road, the eastern end of the 90 Mile Straight. There is a brown sign at the western end of the 90 Mile Straight also.
The Tee is devoted to Edward John Eyre & John Baxter. The name Eyre should be familiar, the Eyre Highway is named after explorer who set out for an expedition from Adelaide to Albany in November 1840. Eyre set off with a pack of horses and supplies along with his companion and friend Baxter and 3 teen aged Aboriginal guides, Wylie, Joey & Yarrie.
The summer conditions proved to be harsh, however, it was in April 1841 that they suffered the greatest turmoil. South of Cocklebiddy, John Baxter was shot and two of the guides ran off with supplies and guns. Eyre and Wylie continued on together and with support received from a chance encounter with a French whaling ship, they completed the expedition in July 1841.
