Iron Pot Creek Picnic Area and Campground are in the southern part of the Toonumbar National Park, set in an enclosed subtropical rainforest.
The campgrounds are generally unmarked. The National Parks website says it is suitable for tents and camper trailers. We had a camper trailer that can use a fair bit of space.
The options were fairly limited but with no one else there when we arrived, we were able to pick wherever we wanted. We may have had troubles fitting in some of the sites. Bookings are not provided so it is first in best dressed.
Being a bit further from the coast, Toonumbar National Park is not as popular as Border Ranges National Park, so it was quieter and we could enjoy the nature mostly to ourselves.
The campgrounds are good for this type of national park camping. The rainforest is fairly dense and the sites are not very open, but there was enough space to feel relaxed. Each site has a picnic table, and there is a central shelter with a picnic table and wood BBQ.
We used the campground as a base to explore the rest of the park. As an alternative, you could camp at
The picnic area is at the opposite end to the campground, with separate toilets and picnic tables. A walking track joins the two as well, heading down to Iron Pot Creek from the campground and following the creek to the picnic area.
Part of the track was closed while we were there, but the walk from the campground to a wonderful little swimming hole had us there every day we were at Iron Pot Creek campground. The water wasn’t deep so it wasn’t really swimming as such, but the water was cool and refreshing during the hot summer days.
It appears that Murray Scrub Road used to cross over the creek at the picnic area to Backadun Rd and on to Afterlee Rd. This is now blocked but our Tom Tom navigator wanted to take us this way instead of entering by Murray Scrub Road.
To get there
From the southern entrance (from Toonumbar Dam ), veer left to continue on Murray Scrub Rd and follow for 6km to reach the campground.
From the northern entrance (from Summerland Way), follow along Toonumbar Forest Dr for 16.8km. Toonumbar Forest Dr is a narrow dirt road and steep in some sections. Care is needed and not suitable for low vehicles. 4wd may be required when wet. Turn right onto Murray Scrub Rd and follow for 6km to reach the campground.
For directions to the southern and northern entrances, see the Toonumbar National Park page.
