The Nullarbor Links Golf Course is an 18 hole course spread over 1,365 kilometres with one hole in each participating town or roadhouse along the Eyre Highway. Some holes are set up specifically for the course, others are a nominated hole at an established golf course.
Hole 4 of the Nullarbor Links Golf Course (or hole 15 in reverse) is at Nundroo. It is a 520m Par 5 hole with a long dog-leg right over rough clumpy grass with a few shrubs. The hole is to the south of the Nundroo Roadhouse with the tee at the opposite end to come back towards the roadhouse to the green.
The hole is named Wombat Hole due to Nundroo having the largest population of Southern Hairy Nosed Wombats in Australia. Regular surveys are done around Nundroo and it is estimated there are over 2.5 million wombats in the area.
The Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat is thriving well, unlike the Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat which are endangered. Southern Hairy Nosed Wombats are used as surrogate mothers to help repopulate their fellow Northern species.
The tee is devoted to Karinkabie, after the Karinkabie Well located in front of the tee towards the right. The well is over 150 years old, established with the first settlers to Nundroo.
Ruins remain of a house and vegetable garden around the well, used by one of the early settlers. The well remained in used for a long time, still used by the Nundroo Roadhouse until the water became too salty for general use.
Card is stamped at the Nundroo Roadhouse.
