The Eden Killer Whale Museum was established in 1931, with displays to discover the intriguing story of the whalers and killer whales working relationship in Twofold Bay.
The whaling industry operated in Eden from the early 1800s through to the 1930s. The Orcas would herd passing whales into the bay and alerting the whalers to give chase.
Old Tom is the most famous killer whale. He took part in the chase, even towing the boats by grabbing the rope in his teeth. Similarly grabbing the rope of a harpooned whale, he’d act as an anchor.
The skeleton of Old Tom is on display, along the museum’s artefacts of the shore-based whaling industry. The marks on the teeth show the wear from the ropes Old Tom grabbed.
