Kunkala is a brown sign outside of The Rosewood Railway, one of two railway stations operated by the railway museum, the other is Cabanda Station.
Cabanda Station doesn’t have a brown sign for it but it has more parking available and you can catch one of their trains through to Kunkala Station during operating days, the last Sunday of each month.
Locomotives at Rosewood Railway have names, including DH38, a diesel-hydraulic locomotive called Warren, DL3, a diesel-mechanical locomotive called Mt Surprise, C17 720, a steam locomotive called Ken Biggs, RM64, a Ford v8 Flathead powered passenger railcar called The Bug, and RM55, a 38kW petrol powered passenger railcar called Red Fred.
Kunkala is on a branch line from Rosewood to Marburg, branching from Queensland’s first main line railway which first ended at Grandchester Railway Station 
. The steeply graded branch line opened in 1912.
During the 1974 floods, a bridge over Rosewood Marburg Road collapsed, severing the railway. In 1984, the restoration of a 3-kilometre section of track from Cabanda to Kunkala began.
The restored rail section is now used by Rosewood Railway using the restored and maintained locomotives at the museum.
Note: We discovered Kunkala late in the afternoon, arriving 15 minutes after their closing time. We later found The Rosewood Railway paused operations in June 2018 and as yet have not resumed operations. Works continue to resume operations at a future date.
To Get There
The Rosewood Railway and Kulkana is on Scenic Rim Tourist Drive 16 between Rosewood and Marburg.
From Rosewood, head north on John St and continue straight at the roundabout, which later becomes Rosewood Marburg Rd. Continue from the roundabout on Rosewood Marburg Rd for 1.8km and turn left into Urry Rd at the blue sign for Railway Museum. Follow Urry Rd for 1.3km and turn right into Keates Rd, then follow Keates Rd for 2.3km to the end, crossing the railway line. Turn left onto Freeman Rd with the entrance less than 100m on the left with the Kunkala brown sign.
From Marburg, head south on Queen St which becomes Rosewood Marburg Rd for 5.6km. Turn left to continue on Rosewood Marburg Rd for another 2.8km and turn right into Urry Rdat the blue sign for Railway Museum. Follow Urry Rd for 1.3km and turn right into Keates Rd, then follow Keates Rd for 2.3km to the end, crossing the railway line. Turn left onto Freeman Rd with the entrance less than 100m on the left with the Kunkala brown sign.
To enter Cabanda Station instead, the entrance is 1km north of Urry Rd on Rosewood Marburg Rd.
