The lookout is from Pilot Hill with views over the Manning River entrance with the break wall and the Harrington township. It is centred with the Australian flag and an information board, and picnic tables sit outside the central area, with a couple of rubbish bins.
Pilot Hill was the location of a pilot station light beacon that operated into the late 1800s. In 1894, a long break wall was built to protect the entry channel for shipping, and protects the township with an access opening further south along the Manning River. The rock wall is now a popular walk for visitors and locals, as well as a fishing spot.

There is a compass showing the direction and distance of surrounding areas and capital cities of Australia, as well as some overseas cities, New York, London, and Auchland.
There is a small cemetery at the lookout. It is understood that the graves of employees of the pilot service that operated from here, guiding coastal steamers in and out of port and across the bar at the mouth of the Manning River.
